Back in the game: Lewisville QB wins eligibility battle ahead of rivalry matchup

Posted

Lewisville High School quarterback Laykon Brassfield is back in the game after the UIL unanimously voted to reinstate him, overturning an earlier ineligibility ruling that sidelined him for four games.

The decision clears the Fighting Farmers’ star quarterback to return to the field just in time for their upcoming game against Flower Mound.

“I’m back, I am back,” Brassfield said.

The reinstatement followed a battle over eligibility that Brassfield’s father, Jonathan Brassfield, said centered on paperwork and establishing the family’s residency.

“The primary concern was residency. We love Lewisville” Jonathan Brassfield said.

For the family, the past several weeks have been challenging as they worked to overturn the decision.

“It’s been incredibly tough, honestly. I think as a father, you try to make a good decision for all of the kids in the house. This has been a lot about paperwork” Jonathan Brassfield said.

Despite the uncertainty, Laykon Brassfield said he remained hopeful that the ruling would go his way.

“All the odds are stacked against us. And we just trusted God that we would get the right answer.” Brassfield said.

His father said the experience also became a lesson in perseverance and showing his children the importance of fighting through adversity.

“There’s a lot of times in life you fight and you don’t win, but watching your kids go through adversity and then showing them that if you fight, you can win.” Jonathan Brassfield said.

While Brassfield waited for the UIL’s decision, his teammates and coaches continued preparing for their next game.

Now, with his eligibility restored, the quarterback has his sights set on more than just a return to the field. He’s hoping to help lead Lewisville into the playoffs and make a deep postseason run, potentially all the way to a state championship.
